If you would like to experiment with something similar to Voltalinux but updated you could follow those 4 simple steps:
1) download the minimal installation Slackware iso image (about 40 MB) from Alien:
http://www.slackware.com/~alien/slackboot/mini/
2) install it
3) download the terrific piece of software pgksrc from NetBSD project:
pkgsrc
4) bootstrap it and continue with the compilation of the packages you like…
